Red says STOP, Green says GO
The just declared election results have vindicated the view of the major chunk of people in West Bengal. The theme of the polls was Change. And what change could be better summed up than by the traffic signal analogy.
Red denotes blood. It also gives a signal to others that says: STOP, Do Not Go.
Though Kolkatans have a strong habit not to follow traffic signals while on the streets, they have faithfully followed the political red signal over the course of decades. Up until now. They have been a most obedient lot who showed extraordinary levels of collective patience that spanned generations. While everyone else all around the globe cocked their snooks at us and galloped ahead, we displayed levels of inertia that proved how true Newton's First Law is. Kolkata remained at rest and others blessed us with R.I.P.
Red said stop. Stop work. Stop growth. Stop thinking. Stop studying. Stop excelling. Stop everything. In fact Stop became a synonym for holiday, albeit a holiday that is forced down our throats. The color red was also put to mundane uses. One such example is of a hand frantically waving a piece of a red cloth from a cab while the cab gleefully ignored all traffic rules and left a chaos in its wake. All it took was a small discolored piece that had perhaps seen some redder days to hold everyone else to ransom. That is the power of red. A battery manufacturer also took up this philosophy to its heart. The batteries that had the power of red, of course, performed as all reds do. Stop.
At long last, the signal turned green. Green says GO.
But although many are raring to go, many have fallen into a stupor. It will take some time for the behemoth to start and maybe quite longer to surge forward. The tricky part will be to channel the immense momentum into positive and productive avenues.
For Kolkatans, many challenges lie ahead. A difficult path full of difficult choices. It is up to the Greens to lead us to a brighter world. An honest and a fair world. Green is also the color of nature. Moving forward with determination should come naturally. Peace and prosperity should be the motto.
Only time will tell what path we choose (or are forced) to tread. For sure, wrong decisions will pave the way for the signal to change to red. And then it really will be a full stop.
